It is in every year 9th month of lunar calendar when the Thai Chinese descendants celebrating "Vegetarian Food Festival" (exact translation of Thai เทศกาลกินเจ), the festival is actually renamed from the Nine Emperor Gods Festival (九皇爷诞). The festival lasts for 9 days where its devotees will practise vegetarianism throughout the 9 day-long festival plus one day on the eve of the festival.

Modern Patongko/ปาท่องโก๋, (Youtiao, Chinese donut, 油条, 油炸鬼) - Chinese donut in Thailand is mistakenly referred as Patongko (White sugar cake, 白糖糕). It is said that in early time white sugar cake was sold together with Chinese Donut, and when the hawker shouted "patongko", most Thai people perceived it was referring to the Chinese Donut and hence the historical mistake, and can never be corrected. |

(it is said that the word cendol is actually originated from Thai "chui duay", or "pls help" since the making of cendol in old days was difficult and often need mutual help), not so sure how it ended up a singapore's product. (In fact it is widely believed that cendol is originated from Java Island of Indonesia) |
